Newton County School System students represented our school district well at the Regional 2023 Braille Challenge held at the Georgia Academy for the Blind. Out of four participating students from the District, TWO won awards... and we are proud of all of them! |

Any blind or visually impaired student in K-12th Grades, who can read and write braille, is eligible to participate in the Braille Challenge. Contestants are divided into five categories and tested on fundamental braille skills such as reading comprehension, spelling, speed and accuracy, proofreading, and charts and graphs.

Sponsored by the Covington Lions Club, our "Lions' granddaughter," Kennedy Carlock, a kindergarten student at Newton County Theme School, brought home the third-place award in the Apprentice category. This marked her very first time competing in the event. Kennedy participated in spelling, proofreading, and reading comprehension.
Two years later, Kennedy was invited to participate in the 2025 Braille Challenge held in Los Angeles!
The event inclueded 1,300 students with the top 50 advancing to the Finals. Students from around the world competed, and Kennedy, being eight years old, maintained her "Apprentice" category...
We are very proud to say that our Kennedy won First Place in the category!
We are extremely happy and proud for Kennedy and her family. It is amazing how someone can not only type braille, but read it using only their finger tips- is hard to understand, but Oh... Kennedy does it so well!
